VWS’s dedication to apprenticeships wins it a nomination for three national awards

VWS, one of the fastest growing high-tech security systems specialists in Scotland, has achieved further national recognition for its ongoing commitment to apprenticeships and investing in young people.

The company, which can lay claim to 31 years experience in the field of networked CCTV, fire detection and security, has been nominated for three awards – two with the Scottish Training Federation (STF) and one with the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards, run by Skills Development Scotland (SDS).

Cumbernauld-based VWS is up for the award for SME Employer of the Year as a result of its dedication to apprenticeships and the development of Young People, for which it has been accredited by Investors in Young People Scotland.

Also nominated for an award – Apprentice of the Year Level 2 – is Jack McGinlay, VWS’s first business administration apprentice who has figured as the public face of the company and its programme to encourage apprentices and young people to join its expansion.

The Scottish Apprenticeship Award will take place at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on Thursday, November 16.

VWS, which presently has 36 staff and a five year plan for organic growth, is also nominated for the Small/Medium Employer of the year with the STF, which will be awarded on Tuesday, September 26 at the Crieff Hydro.

Chris Scott, technical manager at VWS, said: “Apprenticeship recruitment and development is part of a strategy that is helping our business to grow in a sustainable manner. Young people and apprentices are eager to absorb the ethos of the company quickly and with enthusiasm.

“We are proud of our work with young people, and delighted to have it recognised on the national stage. More than that, I hope that Jack wins, because his performance at VWS has been second to none, and I would be proud to see him lift an award on the night.”

VWS is also engaged with New College Lanarkshire and the You Train Modern Apprentice programme, giving young people multiple avenues of entry to the company.
