Glen Oaks Housing Association – Communal Door Replacement & Door Entry Upgrade
The Challenge
Glen Oaks Housing Association required a full upgrade of the communal steel entrance and rear doors, as well as the installation of a modern digital door entry system across 89 tenemental properties. The existing doorsets were outdated and provided limited protection against vandalism and forced entry, while the legacy door entry system lacked reliability, accessibility features, and remote management capability. The project needed to be delivered within occupied residential environments, requiring careful planning, minimal disruption, and strict compliance with Secured by Design (SBD), BS7671, and BS8213-4 standards.
About the Project
VWS was appointed to design, supply, and install 178 Secured by Design-certified steel doorsets and a fully integrated digital door entry system across the estate. The works covered both front and rear communal entrances, enhancing resident safety, building security, and long-term asset performance. The project incorporated Martec Premier E-Type SBD steel doors and Intratone SC‑03 digital door entry systems, providing tenants with a modern, user-friendly access solution. Extensive surveys were completed to ensure accurate manufacture of each doorset, and all installations were undertaken in accordance with BS8213‑4.Key project activities included:
• Replacement of 178 steel doors with SBD-accredited Martec E-Type units.
• Installation of new recessed Intratone SC‑03 intercom panels at main entrances.
• Full ironmongery integration including locking systems, anti-nip hinges and stainless-steel hardware.
• Neat and fully compliant BS7671 cabling installation.
• Commissioning, tenant familiarisation, and a full Operations & Maintenance (O&M) handover pack.

A full O&M manual, including drawings, warranties and maintenance instructions, was provided to Glen Oaks Housing Association. The project was delivered on programme, in full compliance with SBD, STS 202 BR2, ISO9001, ISO14001, OHSAS 45001 and all relevant British Standards. The result is a safer, more secure residential environment with an access system designed for long-term reliability and ease of management.
