Kennishead Multi-Storey Flats
The Challenge
As the current maintenance contractor for Glasgow Housing Association we were asked to provide them with an upgrade from their old analogue system to a full High definition IP system. In addition to this the client requested that additional cameras should be installed within the scheme to cut down on anti-social behaviour. The majority of the new cameras were to be fitted within the front and rear stair passages of the high rise blocks as this is where most of the anti- social behaviour was taking place. All the existing analogue cameras were to be replaced with IP cameras and the recording equipment was to be upgraded. As part of our design it was agreed, to minimise cost to the client, it would be beneficial to rewire the existing cameras rather than use media convertors. This not only improves the system performance but also enabled us to pass on our 25 year manufacturers cable warranty to the client.
About the Project
The project consisted of upgrading six analogue PTZ cameras to six High definition 1080p IP PTZ cameras. Twelve static cameras were also changed from analogue to full HD IP. All the existing analogue recording equipment was removed and replaced with Servers/Network Video Recorders. A further 140 cameras were installed within the anti-social areas. All the cabling infrastructure was renewed or installed with fiber and VWS terminated all the ends. A total of 29 fiber switches were installed and six new servers were fitted to allow full 25fps video storage at 1080p. All the cameras can be displayed on any of the new 42” monitors via a virtual matrix via the workstation software, a total of 4x 42” monitors were installed within a low profile bracket to create an aesthetically pleasing working environment. As a precautionary measure and to provide the client with added value we installed surge protection and uninterruptable power supplies adjacent to the servers. In the event of a power surge or a power outage the recording equipment will be protected.
The Solution
The installation of the additional security cameras has drastically reduced the amount of anti-social behaviour within the previously problematic areas. VWS meet with the client on a monthly basis and we are told that they do not spend as much time cleaning, painting and dealing with general anti-social behavioural issues as a result of the installation.
